Powering Bass Strait islands

We occasionally need to switch off the power to ensure our people have safe access to poles and wires. Unless it’s an emergency, we’ll always notify you at least 4 days before.  

Storms, fallen trees, wildlife and accidents will occasionally cause unplanned blackouts. We always aim to restore power as quickly as possible.

Hydro Tasmania generates and distributes the electricity on the Bass Strait islands. Our retailer is Momentum Energy, which is 100% owned by Hydro Tasmania. Momentum Energy provides retail services to customers on King Island and Flinders Island.

For all billing and connection enquiries, please call Momentum Energy on 1300 662 778 between 8 am and 6 pm, Monday to Friday (AEST). 

Contractors must hold a current Tasmanian Electrical Contractor’s Licence and must provide us with the completed Tasmanian Electrical Works Request (EWR) form and Certificate of Electrical Compliance (CEC) form as soon as the work is finished. This is particularly important for solar connections.  

If a contractor doesn’t submit the forms straight away, their customer may lose their connection agreement or their connection and power purchase agreement.
