Power outages - Bass Strait islands

Planned interruptions
To maintain and improve our equipment, we need to switch off the electricity from time to time so our people have safe access to poles and wires.

Unless it’s an emergency, we'll notify you in writing at least 4 business days before the outage.

For information on current outages, call the 24-hour call centre on 132 004.

Unplanned interruptions
Unfortunately, some power interruptions can’t be avoided. They may be caused by storms, lightning, fallen branches and trees, birds or animals, vehicle accidents or equipment failures.

We’ll try to restore supply as soon as possible. You can help us by letting us know if a power interruption is affecting your property only or is more widespread.

If you have a power outage, please report it to the 24-hour call centre on 132 004.

Life-support customers
If you rely on medical equipment, make sure you have a backup plan in case of unexpected power outages.

We recommend talking to your doctor or other medical providers about where to go if there’s an extended unplanned outage.

How to plan for a power outage
When planning for a power outage, please:
  • keep our 24-hour fault number accessible (on your fridge or noticeboard, or saved as a contact in your mobile phone): 132 004
  • use surge protection for electrical equipment, like TVs and computers
  • prepare an emergency kit and keep it handy – including torches, spare batteries, first-aid supplies, bottled water, non-perishable items, etc.
What to do during a power outage
In a power outage, please take the following actions:
  • Unplug electrical appliances to avoid short circuits when power is restored.
  • Limit how often you open your refrigerator and freezer. Frozen food can last for 24 hours if the freezer door is kept closed. Food in refrigerators can last up to 10 hours.
  • If you’re going to use a generator, use extreme caution. Use generators for power directly to appliances only. Do not connect the output to the house switchboard or wiring. This can put our workers at risk.
  • Leave a light switch on so you know when the power is restored.
  • If you have a home security system, let your security company know about the interruption to make sure alarms operate correctly without power.
