Hands-on and outdoors: how Libby found her career at Hydro Tasmania
"I applied for a traineeship with Hydro Tasmania because I knew it was the kind of job that I could grow with. With such a large number of job opportunities, you’d have a job here for life and can explore so many areas."
But for Libby, it wasn’t just the job stability that stood out. It was the chance to be part of something that matters.
“The renewable energy side really intrigued me. Hydropower is such a major source of clean energy and I wanted to be part of something bigger than just a job.”
“My biggest goal was not to work in an office. I wanted to be outdoors, in nature, doing hands-on work and not a 9 to 5 at a desk. With flexible hours and working in such amazing Tasmanian locations, I think I hit the jackpot.”

Fast forward one year and Libby is thriving! Despite starting with limited knowledge of the industry, she now has a strong grasp of the complex mechanics behind hydropower. One might even say hydropower is the Rubik’s Cube of the electricity world!
“I’m really enjoying learning how everything works. Even something simple such as how the turbine transforms water into electricity. It’s fascinating.” One of her favourite parts of the traineeship is the flexibility to learn across teams and specialisations.
“If I want to learn more about mechanical work, I can spend a week with the fitters. If I’m curious about what the electricians do, or how remote monitoring works, I can ask to try that too. I’ve even had the chance to work out at Gordon Power Station. The opportunity is there, you simply have to take it.”
Among many memorable projects, one in particular stands out, undertaking an inspection of the unique Liapootah Tunnel. “At the beginning of my traineeship, I was asked to do high-risk work through a 14-kilometre underground tunnel to detect any damage to a major pipe. It was an invaluable experience, and I felt very lucky to be involved.”
With a solid foundation under her belt, Libby’s looking to the future. “My goal is to move into a supervisor role one day. My Hydro Tasmania traineeship can take me anywhere I want to go within the business.”
Her advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship or traineeship at Hydro Tasmania?
“Apply! Be open to all learning and education and take pride in your work. The more you put in, the more you get out.”
