Feeling the spark: Chilli’s apprenticeship journey
Mechanical Apprentice Chilli is based at our Cambridge workshop just outside of Hobart. He is passionate about our apprenticeship program and loves to share his experience.
“Initially, my interest in the apprenticeship was sparked by a love for machine tools and fitting. But throughout the induction process, I began to understand just how dynamic and forward-looking the renewable energy industry is,” says Chilli.
Before joining Hydro Tasmania, Chilli admits he didn’t know much about how hydropower worked or the role it played in the broader energy landscape.
“I’m drawn to industries that are essential to the economy and contribute to Tasmania’s future growth. Hydro Tasmania is a leader in renewable energy generation in Australia which is not only exciting, but it also opens the door to diverse career opportunities that I wouldn’t find in other sectors.”
A rewarding and hands-on job was always something Chilli wanted in a career. In his current role, he gets exactly that, including mechanical experience and fitting.
“I’m involved in a lot of repair and overhaul work at the Cambridge workshop. My favourite tasks involve using lathes, mills, and other machining equipment to produce or refurbish parts. You get hands-on work with both intricate and large-scale machinery.”
One of the most unexpected aspects of the apprenticeship, Chilli says, was how valued he would feel as part of the team. No grabbing coffees or photocopying here!

“Hydro Tasmania goes above and beyond to involve the apprentices. Everyone has a voice, and the supportive management team makes a big difference in how empowered I feel to learn and contribute.”
Every day is different, with unique learning opportunities at the well-equipped Cambridge workshop. His journey has been one of growth and not just as a tradesman, but as a skilled professional in diverse fields, unlike other traditional apprenticeships.
“One of the highlights is the mentorship I’ve received from experienced tradespeople. Their guidance has not only helped me improve my technical skills but also boosted my confidence as I grow into the role.”

And Chilli’s advice for future potential apprentices?
“My advice is simply to go for it. There are so many different roles across the business, from hands-on site work to technical roles in the office that there is something to suit everyone.”
“I feel confident that I’ve chosen the right path, and I’m proud to contribute to Australia’s shift toward cleaner, more sustainable energy.”
Nicely put, Chilli.
