Poatina penstock that delivers water to Poatina Power Station needs internal 

The team pegged out the work site and completed important environmental checks, including surveying for the large-bird orchid to ensure appropriate buffer zones are set up.

We partnered with Workskills Tasmania to provide a group of young people from the Derwent Valley and beyond the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the construction industry. Together we flew drones, dug trenches for sediment curtains and helped install the finishing touches to the accommodation pods. It’s great to be giving local kids the opportunity to see what careers can happen in their own back yards!

Our focus continues to be on preparing the site - at Edgar Dam, regrowth vegetation has been cleared from the site office and material stockpile areas. Minor clearing of regrowth vegetation has also been completed along Scotts Peak Road for a small stockpile area and on the western side of the dam where sedimentation ponds will be built. Once the project is completed, these cleared areas will be revegetated.

Why were these maps produced and what do they show?

Hydro Tasmania created flood maps for the Huon Valley region as part of mandatory requirements set by the regulator, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania. They show the worst-case scenario of flooding if the Edgar Dam was to fail suddenly and are part of standard emergency management preparations.

We shared the maps with the regulator in 2016 and with emergency services, Tasmania police, and the Huon Valley Council Emergency Management Committee.
