Tarraleah

Update on approvals

Update 04 Jun, 2026
Commonwealth approvals

Major projects must be assessed by the Australian Government if they could impact on matters of national environmental significance. We’ve been keeping you updated on how the Tarraleah Redevelopment project is progressing through this process.

Last year, we submitted an updated application (called a “referral”) and invited public feedback in August. Since then, the Commonwealth has asked us for extra information. They have also confirmed that the Project needs a full environmental assessment (this is called a ‘controlled action’).

The assessment will be done using what’s known as preliminary documentation. This means the Government will review our referral along with the extra information we provide. This process is managed by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW).

What does that mean for you?

Once DCCEEW is satisfied with our information, we will:

  • Publish the documents on our website
  • Invite the community to read them and provide feedback
  • Consider and address any public comments.

The final decision will be made by the Federal Environment Minister.

We’re currently working on the additional information and expect to submit it by the end of June. We’ll let you know when the next public comment period opens.

Keep an eye on this page and our socials for updates!

State and local approvals

Public exhibition of the Project’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Development Application (DA) closed on 25 May.

We’re now reviewing a small number of submissions on the EIS and drafting a response to the EPA for their determination later this year. Once EPA approval is received, the EIS and DA go before Central Highlands Council for their approval of the development. We expect this will happen closer to the end of the year.

NOTE: The project hasn’t reached a Final Investment Decision. This will require the approvals noted above being granted, as well as approval by the Tasmanian Parliament.
