She's down-to-earth, practical and quietly confident. And in just a few weeks, she'll begin the fourth and final year of her electrical apprenticeship with Hydro Tasmania.

It wasn't always the plan.

After finishing college, Candice enrolled at TAFE to study IT. But during one of her classes, something clicked. A lesson on Ohm's Law sparked an interest she hadn't expected, and before long, she'd swapped computer screens for switchboards and decided to pursue an electrical apprenticeship instead.

Side note for readers: Ohm's Law is the basic rule that explains how voltage, current and resistance work together in an electrical circuit.

Three years later, she hasn't looked back.

One of the biggest surprises of the job? Just how much of Tasmania Candice has seen.

As part of her apprenticeship, she's worked across all ten power stations in the Upper and Lower Derwent, as well as the iconic Gordon Power Station.

"Gordon is huge," Candice says. "You go down an elevator almost 60 storeys. That is roughly twice the height of the Statue of Liberty!"

Every site has been different, every job has taught her something new, and every experience has helped build her confidence as an electrician.

Next up is the Poatina outage, another opportunity to broaden her skills with the support of her manager and team.

"People at Hydro Tasmania are supportive of new opportunities. If you speak up and show commitment to getting experience, you'll get it."

It's the people that make the difference

Ask Candice which power station is her favourite and her answer isn't based on the view or the machinery.

"Where my team is."

For Candice, the people have made all the difference.

"Everyone is so happy and open to helping. You can ask stupid questions and no one makes you feel bad for asking them."

That willingness to teach, support and encourage has helped her grow throughout her apprenticeship and given her the confidence to keep saying yes to new experiences.

And yes, there are some unexpected perks along the way.

"You often find a dog at some stations."

A workplace where women are supported

Electrical trades have traditionally been male-dominated, but Candice says she has always felt supported at Hydro Tasmania.

Her advice for other women thinking about a trade is refreshingly straightforward.

"As long as you're fine getting dirty—go for it."

She also points to the practical things that show Hydro Tasmania is committed to supporting women in the workplace.

"There are tampons and pads in every toilet facility at every power station. This business really supports women."

It's a simple example, but one that reflects a culture where people are considered and supported.
