An update on the energy situation was provided on 1 February by Energy Minister Matthew Groom.

In response to the combination of several months of unprecedented low inflows and an extended Basslink outage, Hydro Tasmania has secured diesel generating units to supplement existing on-island generation capacity. The first stage of this contingency generation strategy is underway, with 24MW of diesel generation being progressively delivered to Tasmania from today.

Two of three power stations affected by fire in the Mersey Forth scheme in Tasmania’s north-west have been returned to service.

The Trent gas unit at the Tamar Valley Power Station was sent for repair under warranty in September last year and is currently undergoing service in Abu Dhabi.

Hydro Tasmania and Marine and Safety Tasmania advise that all three formally recognised boat ramps at Lake Burbury have been closed due to low lake levels as a result of unprecedented low inflows.

An update on the Basslink interconnector outage was provided on 27 January by the owners and operators Basslink Pty Ltd.

Power stations affected by fire in the Mersey Forth scheme in Tasmania’s north west are being progressively returned to service.

Fires currently burning near power generation assets have posed no threat to energy supply. Hydro Tasmania is working closely with the Tasmania Fire Service and TasNetworks, to ensure protection of generation assets is appropriately prioritised in the current fire situation.
