Edgar Dam

Project Update – April 2025

Update 02 Apr, 2025
Sneaking in a late April update - it was a busy 30 days!

We partnered with Workskills Tasmania to provide a group of young people from the Derwent Valley and beyond the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the construction industry. Together we flew drones, dug trenches for sediment curtains and helped install the finishing touches to the accommodation pods. It’s great to be giving local kids the opportunity to see what careers can happen in their own back yards! Take a look at our Spill blog for more info and pics Hydro Tasmania and Workskills Tasmania Empower Young People with Hands-On Career Exposure.

Along the dam, the construction team completed drilling investigations along the causeway. The data collected will tell us how and where to excavate to make space for the new dam buttress. Large cores through the dam crest concrete have also been completed in preparation for new permanent survey targets. These targets will be used to monitor the dam’s movement during construction and for the rest of its 100 plus year life! Finally, we started work on a new wave protection concrete slab on the upstream face, in preparation for installing durable concrete joint seals called waterstops.

In the campground, the new staff camp is now complete and as the temps drop, the team are particularly happy about the new canteen and warm rooms.

We also progressed the western sediment basins. While these look a little bleak, once complete, the 3 basins will store all site runoff and toe pond water until it is clear enough to discharge into Edgar Pond. This ensures surrounding plants and animals remain unaffected by the works.

The temporary staff camp is ready to go!

The staff canteen will be especially welcomed now temps are dropping
