Making a splash: Hydro Tasmania and Paddle Tasmania host community paddle day

Media releases 02 Mar, 2026
Members of the community participated in an exciting day of paddling in the River Forth on Sunday 1 March, thanks to a collaboration between Hydro Tasmania and Paddle Tasmania.

More than 20 people attended and had the chance to try their hand at paddling in two 1.5-hour sessions under the guidance of experienced Tasmania Canoe Club instructors.

The day was designed for beginners of all ages with a focus on getting local families on the river to experience the fun and adventure that can be had in the region, and the thriving local club that supports this sport.

Participants went through a safety induction before being introduced to the basics of paddling and finally setting out on the river. A free barbecue lunch was provided to all participants after their big day on the water.

Cousins Noah Hampton, 8, and Riley New, 9, attended the paddle day with their families and described their experience as “mostly awesome,” encouraging everyone to “definitely try paddling.”

As Tasmania’s largest water manager, Hydro Tasmania is passionate about ensuring the public has accessible, well-maintained recreational areas.

“Tasmania’s lakes and rivers are here for everyone to enjoy and today is a wonderful example of how the community can use these beautiful waterways,” said Hydro Tasmania Executive General Manager of People, Governance and Corporate Affairs Ruth Groom.

“It’s been fantastic to see so many members of the community out on the water today," said Ms Groom.

“Hydro Tasmania’s waterways are a shared resource that return much more than just renewable energy and Hydro Tasmania manages them to ensure benefits flow to all.”

Hydro Tasmania works closely with the Tasmanian Canoe Club to ensure water releases from upstream dams in the Mersey-Forth Hydropower Scheme deliver perfect paddling conditions.

Paddle Tasmania Executive Officer Marisol Miró Quesada said it was fantastic to see so many newcomers trying paddling today.

“It was truly wonderful to see so many members of the community experience the fun and warm welcome of our paddling family today,” said Ms Quesada.

“We hope this day inspires everyone to join a great local club like the Tasmanian Canoe Club and become part of our wonderful community.”

Hydro Tasmania manages waterways to support recreational activities across the State, including paddling, fly-fishing, rowing and water skiing.
