Hydro Tasmania supports Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania to power Wybalenna on Flinders Island
The Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania (ALCT) shared their vision for the site as a space for gathering, truth telling, reflection and healing, and the challenges of undertaking work in a place that holds profound cultural significance.
Hydro Tasmania’s consulting business Entura designed the overhead high voltage powerline extension, and Hydro Tasmania is working alongside the ALCT to connect power to both the chapel and homestead at the site.
Hydro Tasmania’s contribution is one element of a broader commitment to working in partnership with Aboriginal people, reflecting the business’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commitment and Action Plan.
Hydro Tasmania CEO Rachel Watson said the business was committed to delivering the actions outlined in the plan.
“My commitment, and the commitment of Hydro Tasmania, is to build respectful, trusting and enduring connections with Tasmanian Aboriginal people and to foster a culture of working together to care for Country,” said Ms Watson.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to stand alongside ALCT on this important project at Wybalenna.”
Hydro Tasmania is committed to supporting community needs in ways that respect cultural priorities and uphold the integrity of significant landscapes.
At Wybalenna, this meant approaching the work with guidance and direction from ALCT, and ensuring that any action taken aligned with the values and expectations of the community.
