Hydro Tasmania completes last major demolition at Bell Bay Power Station

12 January 2026

Hydro Tasmania completed the final major demolition at the former Bell Bay Power Station today (Monday), bringing down the 110-metre-tall stack in a controlled blast.

Hydro Tasmania has partnered with specialist contractor McMahon Services Australia to carry out the demolition of the power station and successfully demolished the stack this morning.

A total of 41 kilograms of explosives were used in a controlled explosion to bring down the structure.

Electronic detonators were programmed to control timing and ensure a safe and precise collapse.

Hydro Tasmania Project Director Aaron McCreath said the final big blast had been a success.

“The demolition of the stack was a big moment the team had been waiting for and they did a fantastic job,” said Mr McCreath.

“Bringing down such a tall and narrow structure is very complex work and requires a highly skilled specialist team.”

“We’re now at the tail end of completing the works at the former Bell Bay Power Station so the site can be repurposed.”

Strict safety controls were put in place, including a 400-metre exclusion zone monitored by trained sentries and traffic controllers.

McMahon Services Australia was also engaged to manage asbestos and hazardous material at the site. This has been handled in accordance with Work, Health and Safety regulations, guidelines and safe work practices, including oversight from an independent asbestos assessor.

Hydro Tasmania engaged with the community in the lead up to the demolition through emails, letters, social media and direct communication with nearby residents and businesses.

Works to prepare for the demolition at Bell Bay Power Station began in April 2024.

The demolition of the boiler house was carried out in October 2025. All work at the site is expected to be complete in early 2026.

Ends.
