Hydro Tasmania completed another major demolition at the former Bell Bay Power Station today (Tuesday), moving another step closer to clearing the way for Bell Bay Powerfuels’ green hydrogen and methanol project.
Hydro Tasmania has partnered with specialist contractor McMahon Services Australia to carry out the demolition of the power station and successfully demolished the station’s boiler house this morning.
A total of 56 kilograms of explosives were used in a controlled explosion to bring down the 44-metre steel structure measuring 50 metres long and 20 metres wide, as well as the two boilers inside.
Electronic detonators were programmed to control timing and ensure a safe and precise collapse.
Hydro Tasmania Project Director Aaron McCreath said the blast had gone smoothly.
“Today’s blast was even bigger than the last one and the team did a fantastic job,” said Mr McCreath.
“This is complex, specialised work and months of preparation are required to execute a swift demolition.”
“It’s another big step towards completing the demolition of the former Bell Bay Power Station so the site can be repurposed.”
Strict safety controls were put in place, including a 500-metre exclusion zone monitored by trained sentries and traffic controllers.
McMahon Services Australia was also engaged to manage asbestos and hazardous material at the site. This has been handled in accordance with Work, Health and Safety regulations, guidelines and safe work practices, including oversight from an independent asbestos assessor.
Hydro Tasmania engaged with the community in the lead up to the demolition through emails, letters, social media and direct communication with nearby residents and businesses.
Works to prepare for the demolition at Bell Bay Power Station began in April 2024.
The demolition of the control room was carried out in early September this year. All work at the site is expected to be complete in early 2026.
