Powering the Bass Strait islands

Bass Strait is the body of water separating Tasmania from mainland Australia. There are two major inhabited islands in Bass Strait, King Island and Flinders Island.

Hydro Tasmania is licensed to provide electricity generation, distribution and retailing services on the Bass Strait Islands. The retailing function is performed under contract by Hydro Tasmania’s 100% owned retailing entity Momentum Energy

We have a specific customer charter for Bass Strait island customers. In our Charter we summarise the rights, entitlements and obligations you have as a customer and the rights, entitlements and obligations we have relating to the provision of electricity services. Our Charter should be read in conjunction with your contract.

Hydro Tasmania has a formal agreement with the Tasmanian Government to provide concessional arrangements to electricity customers living on the Bass Strait islands via a declared Community Service Obligation. The Tasmanian Government provides around $8 million per annum in funding support. It also determines the pricing for customers. You can download the electricity tariffs from from 15 April 2013 here (PDF 120 KB).
