As Australia’s leading renewable energy business, Hydro Tasmania generates an incredible amount of energy for the Australian market.
Every year, we produce around 9000 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity from hydropower – our renewable energy. That’s enough electricity to power over 50,000 small businesses in Australia!

How we produce hydropower
Put simply, hydropower is created by tapping into the natural forces of water. Find out more >
We have an integrated hydropower scheme which harnesses power from six major water catchments. Our system has a total capacity of over 2600 megawatts and includes 30 power stations, 50 major dams and various other infrastructure. Find out more >
We then sell this energy in Tasmania and to the rest of Australia via Basslink, the world’s second longest undersea electricity cable.
We’re thinking ahead
At Hydro Tasmania, we take a long-term view to ensure our system can provide Australians with a reliable source of power for the long term. We also manage our risks in a way that allows us to respond rapidly to the daily and seasonal fluctuations of the market.
