There are so many activities that you can enjoy at our recreation sites, from South to North to out West! From day trips to weekends (or even weeks) away, you can enjoy life on the water, snag the catch of the summer or just enjoy Tasmania’s unique environments.
If you’re looking for a new activity for the whole family, check out some of our favourites below. You can view all of our recreation sites around the state at www.hydro.com.au/things-to-do
Water is at the core of everything we do at Hydro Tasmania. So, we may be a little bit bias when it comes to thinking of things to do on the weekends! With many lake-side recreation spots and boat ramps, we love to leave the good old terra firma behind and embrace the nautical life.
One of our favourite places to get into the water is Bronte Lagoon. With multiple access points and a campground, Bronte is a fantastic place to set yourself up for a weekend on the water.
If catching a whopper is on your summer to do list, we can help. The lakes we use to generate clean hydropower are also some of the best fishing spots in Tasmania. Whether you like to get out in the boat, or are less inclined to leave the land behind, there’s something for everyone.
Tungatinah Lagoon, part of the Bradys Chain alongside Bradys Lake and Lake Binney, is around 2 hours' drive from Hobart. The chain offers anglers a range of fishing experiences. Trolling and spin fishing are both popular and there is no need to use deep diving lures.
Camping is a wonderful way to switch off and enjoy the stillness of nature. We have a wonderful selection of free campsites available for you to choose from, suited to tents, caravans and even motor-homes. No matter what kind of outdoor adventure you are looking for, we have a site to suit your tastes!
For the family trips, we recommend the Lake Binney campground in Tassie’s Central Highlands. This spot is a beautiful place to explore by day and enjoy a toasty campfire by night.
If your summer holidays are jam packed, you might only have a day to spare. Many of our sites are also suited to enjoying just a few hours of the great outdoors, with the whole family.
For the day-trippers, you can’t go past Trevallyn Dam. Less than 10 minutes from Launceston, this is a great spot for a picnic lunch, or bring along some sausages to cook on the electric BBQs! Here you can enjoy leisurely trail walks, bike rides, and take in the fantastic view over Trevallyn Dam.
Have you got a keen eye for photography? While enjoying Tasmania’s scenic views, take the opportunity to grab that wallpaper-worthy photo that all your colleagues will be asking about!
The hilltop lookout overlooking Reece Dam on the Pieman River is a great spot to have a bite to eat, and check out over the stunning views of Tasmania. We might be a bit bias, but Reece Dam is a beauty!

To coincide with the opening of the angling season, we asked our Senior Aquatic Scientist David Ikedife for some tips on where to head to make the most of Tasmania's waterways
If you’re packing the camping gear into the boot of the car this holiday season there’s a good chance you’ll come across some of our camping and recreation sites. If you’re not sure where they are or which one would be best for you, take a look at our ‘find-a-site’ interactive map.
