Meet Kodi: Electrifying IT across Tasmania’s power stations

30 October 2024

Meet Kodi, our IT superstar who brings the best energy to Hydro HQ and beyond! Kodi started working with Hydro Tasmania as an external vendor, catching a glimpse into the wonder of our hydropower stations across Tassie. Fast forward a few years, Kodi has now ticked off visiting every one of our power stations, to complete his power station passport!

Kodi is part of our amazing internal IT customer support team, who support our employees with their technical questions and requests – from engineers to scientists, call-centre employees to commercial energy traders. It’s a diverse role, not only because of the technology, but because of the many locations that our people are spread across in Tasmania, Victoria and even India. “Whilst working at Hydro Tasmania through an external company, I got to explore Hydro Tasmania’s vast array of power stations. From there, my love for this organisation and its people grew, and it’s been a dream to work here ever since,” said Kodi.

“I have a great desire to understand and see how things function, as well as see behind the scenes and see how much work goes into generating renewable energy. I love seeing people come together to get to a common goal”.

Kodi’s initial expectation of his role was just fixing computers but he has instead experienced a huge variety of work that happens across Hydro Tasmania. “Even within the IT operations area, the team is so encompassing of sharing information, learning, and giving each other different opportunities to go into different networks. It’s a really great team environment and a brilliant place to work”.

“The one piece of advice that someone once mentioned to me was to not expect to learn everything in the first 5-10 years. There is so much to learn, and you are continuing to learn, the further your career progresses,” says Kodi.

At Hydro Tasmania, we are very lucky to have assets and infrastructure across Tasmania, including in remote corners of our island state. And who said that IT work is desk work! In Kodi’s short time at Hydro Tasmania, he has ticked off every single one of our thirty hydropower stations across Tassie! PLUS, our two hybrid power stations on King Island and Flinders Island – completing his ‘power station passport’.

“With such a large amount of power stations across the state, it is a requirement for us to travel and get out and interact with these teams and build relationships. Relationships are key to providing great support across the state”.

It’s hard to just pin one favourite power station. Gordon holds a very special place in my heart, but Flinders Island is spectacular! “It’s also hard not to include the West Coast, the amazing views in every direction,” says Kodi.

At Hydro Tasmania, careers can differ between working in the office and out on site, across some of Tasmania’s best landscapes and scenery. "We have one of the greatest cultures I’ve seen in a workplace, everyone is so encouraging and supportive and it’s great to see mental health such a high priority. I’ve had friends who applied here because of how amazing I’ve told them it is; it’s been one of the greatest career decisions I’ve ever made.”

“There is a huge amount of pride for myself, and my team. The work we do is paramount to ensuring the business runs smoothly and efficiently. I see it as our clear goal to deliver clean energy to Tasmania, and I wear my Hydro badge with pride on the street.”

The legacy of John Butters >

It’s not every day that a power station evokes tears of sentimental joy but that is precisely the effect the John Butters Power Station had on one special visitor recently.

It’s hard to believe that in 2019, some professions are still regarded as ‘male’ or ‘female’ careers. We at Hydro Tasmania believe in diversity in the workplace and are working actively to increase opportunities for women to enter and remain in traditionally male-dominated professions like engineering.
