Amber Nguyen began her journey with Hydro Tasmania this year as Graduate IT Analyst. Amber recently won the TasICT Student of the Year award, recognising her amazing passion and commitment to the industry. However, it has not always been an easy journey for her.

Moving to Melbourne in 2019, Amber studied a Bachelor of Business Information Systems before coming to Tasmania for a change of pace and to study her Master of Information Technology and Systems at the University of Tasmania. In 2023, Amber became Study Tasmania’s International Student Ambassador.

“As an international student coming here and speaking in a second language, I understand how challenging it was. There are different environments, different people and you are separated from the environment you grew up with – your friends and family – you don’t really know anyone."

As International Student Ambassador, Amber’s goal was to educate, empower and promote awareness for students surrounding the services on offer to international students. “So students can take advantage of it, and they can grow faster," said Amber.

Excelling in the Tasmanian IT industry, Amber secured a role as Graduate IT Analyst at Hydro Tasmania five months ago. Our IT Graduates gain a diverse skill set by collaborating across many different areas of IT, ranging from Service Desk to Enterprise Architecture. This exposure extends beyond traditional technical roles and provides insights into various facets of IT.

"Due to the advancements in technology and an increasing demand for innovation and digital solutions, IT is evolving rapidly and as a result Australia is experiencing an increasing shortage of IT skills,” said Charmaine Stanton, Manager of IT Planning and Commercial at Hydro Tasmania, and TacICT Committee Secretary. “Overcoming these challenges requires a focus on nurturing talent within the industry, which is essential for meeting these rising skill demands.”

“Hydro Tasmania’s Graduate program is committed to cultivating a diverse and talented workforce which is ready for the future."

Our Graduate Program is built to not only develop Graduates in their chosen field, but to also create a support system that they can leverage to kick-start their career. Upon joining our program, Graduates will be assigned peer and leadership mentors, alongside the support of their Managers and team, plus our Talent and Early Careers Partner. Not only equipping our Graduates with the technical skills they need to succeed, but with interpersonal and professional skills to ensure they become versatile professionals capable of meeting the evolving demands of the ICT industry.

“There are lots of options to move and grow, with comprehensive training programs for Graduates."

Amber is currently in the Database and Analytics team with her current team leader Steve Isaac. “I want to thank them for their hard work, support and dedication towards the new graduates. It has been absolutely fantastic to be a part of this team,” said Amber.

I have seen Amber mature and grow in the last five months not only within her technical skills, but as a young professional,” says Hayley, Talent and Early Careers Partner at Hydro Tasmania.

“Tasmania in particular has many barriers for international students applying for positions here. At Hydro Tasmania we offer an open and transparent recruitment process where we assess all different factors. In some organisations it is a requirement to hold permanent residency at the time of applying, which then eliminates them from the recruitment process”. said Hayley.

“You can tell from the beginning; the organisation really cares about the long-term development of their Graduates - and is why I was interested in working for a company like Hydro Tasmania.”

“Knowing that every day when you wake up and go to work, you’re making contributions to the future for our future generations, to something more sustainable and greener.”  When you apply this with her passion for solving problems in IT, “it is really rewarding…” says Amber.

So, what is Amber’s top tip for future Graduates?

“Networking,” said Amber. “As a fresh graduate, it can feel very intimidating. But it is so beneficial to hear their [colleague’s] career stories. I can learn a lot because they are experts in their fields. So, expanding my network has definitely helped, it has also been great for my confidence.”

Congratulations to Amber on winning TasICT 2024 Student of the year, and we wish you all the best for your big future ahead!

It’s hard to believe that in 2019, some professions are still regarded as ‘male’ or ‘female’ careers. We at Hydro Tasmania believe in diversity in the workplace and are working actively to increase opportunities for women to enter and remain in traditionally male-dominated professions like engineering.
