Tech, Teams, and Transformation: Inga’s Career Evolution

20 June 2025

In today's fast-paced business environment, career trajectories are often non-linear, with a blend of opportunities, personal growth, and shifting passions. For one Hydro Tasmania leader, the path from a Geomatics Consultant to the Manager of IT Commercial and Planning has been one of continuous learning, innovation, and embracing change.

It all began in 2008 when Inga started her journey as a Geomatics Consultant with our consulting arm, Entura. Over the years her role expanded, as did her passion for spatial information science! This exciting field brings together cutting-edge technology like 3D mapping, GPS, drones, and satellite imagery (that does sound fun!).

"Hydro Tasmania has such a diverse portfolio of assets including infrastructure, water, land, and the environment and that really kept me hooked alongside my career passions in geospatial information,” said Inga.

After working with Entura for nine years, Inga moved into our IT team in various roles before eventually stepping into the role of Manager IT Commercial and Planning. Becoming a leader wasn’t always the plan for Inga, however, the evolving and supportive culture at Hydro Tasmania had a profound influence on her career aspirations.

"I didn't always see myself in leadership, but over time, I became really interested in leading innovation and strategy. It was around that time that the business was undergoing its cultural transformation, and I wanted to be part of that change."

Today, Inga manages two teams and despite the challenges that leadership can bring, she has had a positive support system along the way. "I put my hand up for every training and development opportunity that comes my way, including external scholarships. The support from Hydro Tasmania has been fantastic.”

Being a mentor is something that Inga finds especially fulfilling.

"Mentoring is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. Whether you're the mentor or the mentee, you're always learning. It’s a two-way street, and that fresh perspective can be invaluable.”

Earlier this year, Inga had the opportunity to act in another role, allowing her to explore new challenges and develop new skills. "I recently acted in the role of Head of IT whilst my manager was on leave which was a great experience. It’s an awesome way to get a feel for a different position. You meet new people, form new relationships, and gain confidence. The perspective you get from stepping into someone else’s shoes is incredibly valuable.”

Having two children herself, Inga understands first-hand the challenges that come with balancing work and family life. "When I had my kids, my partner couldn’t access much parental leave. It added a lot of pressure on me. It’s really heartening to see so many dads in Hydro Tasmania taking parental leave now. It’s a huge deal to have that equal split of responsibilities, and it really helps ease the load of the unpaid work. Now both my partner and I work flexibly when needed, and it has been a game changer."

"I’m just really glad that our work culture has evolved in such a positive direction. We’re focused on supporting one another, whether it's through flexible work arrangements or leadership development. It feels like we're all working together to make a difference."
