The best thing about the job is the flexibility and the people. People are the most important piece. I've made some good friendships. Instead of working in an office you're outdoors with some pretty cool toys. There's always somewhere to move up through the ranks and progress with Hydro Tasmania too. You could be a trainee one year and an apprentice the next. If you get in and have a go and you fail, what's the worst that can happen?

What attracted me to Hydro Tasmania was the ability to build a career, not just a job. The underpinning nature of Hydro is that they look after their people and they have a very safety-minded outlook on how we go about things and also building our people, building knowledge through training and mentoring and then also from that, building careers. Hydro puts a lot of effort into helping people to progress their career. Whether it's training, mentoring with senior people, or working in a different role for a while to progress skills in that area.

For those of us who live rurally, it's great that we have the opportunity to work in our backyards and not have to move into a city to pursue a career. Our generation is seeing first-hand how climate change is slowly impacting our environment, so working for a company which is determined to help reduce climate change is something I am very proud of.

A respected engineer from Hydro Tasmania was holding a course at the university. We had a conversation, and he encouraged me to apply as a graduate that year. I've been with Hydro Tasmania now for 20 years. To me, it is all about the people. The people are innovators and everybody wants to see it come together. It's the sense of achievement in being part of a team that can undertake this work. I could never do this on my own. That's what keeps me going.

Even though I was in the graduate program, it was no different to being a regular employee. I had the opportunity to use my maternity leave and when I came back I was fully supported in working flexibly. I've been very lucky that our business is so supportive of hiring women into STEM fields, because not every business is as committed to diversity and inclusion.

Our core values

The kind of culture you'll find at Hydro Tasmania sets us apart from other workplaces. Our values are more than words, they reflect our priorities as a business as well as our culture. It's also just about being human, looking out for each other and doing what's right. We think you'll like it here.

     We keep each other safe
We are all about our customers
     We are better together
     We find a way
     We do the right thing

We value your work-life balance

Life outside of work is important to us all. We understand and meet the demands of your personal life. We assist life changes and flexibility arrangements like paid parental leave, flexible working hours, rostered days off, job sharing, part-time work and carer's leave.

Your professional development is our priority

Every employee at Hydro Tasmania has an opportunity to develop a career progression pathway. We encourage our people to set career goals and continually develop their skills. With a focus on learning and development, we support people who want to undertake further study in their field or develop their leadership skills. We encourage diversity and inclusion

Equality, respect and acceptance. To us, diversity and inclusion isn't just a recruitment fad. We listen, understand, embrace the differences among us and employ a wide range of people from all over the world with all kinds of educational backgrounds and religions. It's not just about hiring diversely, it's about helping people bridge the digital skills gap, encouraging everyone to bring their skills to the table and creating a culture of knowledge sharing.

Diversity and inclusion brings the best out in our people, provides a happier workplace and creates a broader understanding across our team so we can relate to each other and our customers better. We'll discuss diversity and inclusion when we meet and talk with you and are happy to accommodate individual needs, abilities and flexible working arrangements.
