Maintenance Assistant Chris Volpi at Mackintosh Dam

It’s a beautiful part of the world on the west coast. There’s plenty of fresh air, and you get to work outside while inspecting the dam. Even though we’re remote, we have access to technology and advice from our engineers and managers at any time.

I love that Hydro Tasmania not only produces clean energy but opens up the land for the community and tourists to explore, fish or go bushwalking. It doesn't get much better than this. It's a good feeling what we do.

At Hydro Tasmania you can become anything you want. I came into Hydro as a Maintenance Assistant doing dam surveillance and off-siding the fitters and electricians. Later I gained qualifications as an electrician and now I’m an Area Coordinator.

I’ve had two children while working for Hydro Tasmania and found the business to be supportive around maternity leave, returning to the workforce and helping me to develop new skills and grow my career.

Maintenance Assistant Anthony Franklin in the Meadowbank Power Station

Anthony Franklin

I was born and raised on a farm in Ouse. I’d worked on the farm all my life, but it was time for a change. I saw Hydro Tasmania was advertising for a Trainee Maintenance Assistant and applied. I've worked here for two years now, and I’d recommend the job to anyone.

Instead of working in an office you’re outdoors with some pretty cool toys. There's always somewhere to move up through the ranks and progress. You could be a trainee maintenance assistant one year and electrical apprentice the next. My advice is, get in and have a go. If you fail, what’s the worst that can happen?

If you're looking for a rewarding career where your abilities and passion will be nurtured and encouraged to grow, this is the job for you. Not only will you have the opportunity to work in a team with amazing people, you also get the chance to work on machinery that only a select group of people in the world get to work on.

About the role

Based at one of our field locations, under the guidance of our senior technicians you'll be working alongside some of the state's best tradespeople across our set of unique hydro generation assets.

When you're not working inside one of our power stations, you'll be outside in Tasmania's natural beauty, inspecting dams and canals.

If you want the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and knowledge of generation machinery, this is the role for you!

For our 2021 intake, we are seeking five enthusiastic individuals at the following sites:

  • Tullah, West Coast
  • Gowrie Park, Mersey-Forth
  • Poatina / Trevallyn, Launceston
  • Tungatinah, Upper Derwent
  • Wayatinah, Lower Derwent

Application instructions

Your application must include a resume and cover letter. This is your opportunity to tell us about any relevant experience or skills you have (or are working towards) and why you would be the best person for the job.

Tell us about...

  • Why you want to work for Hydro Tasmania and what interests you about the role
  • Show us your practical and hands-on experiences, for example, if your hobbies include tinkering with your car, woodwork, welding or previous projects you've completed on the job
  • Your experience balancing multiple priorities, including work and study
  • What safety in the workplace means to you

Having trade experience isn't a pre-requisite for this role, but you do need to be ready for a challenge. We're looking for people who are driven to do the right thing, be able to demonstrate excellent team work skills and have a passion for renewable energy.
