A close look at Battery of Nation opportunities

3 October 2017

Tasmanians have a chance to see Australia’s clean energy revolution in action over the next six weeks.

Australia’s largest generator of renewable energy, Hydro Tasmania, is holding its annual power station tour program at three major stations:

• Meadowbank Power Station (south) – Saturday 14 October, 10am to 2pm.
• Cethana Power Station (north-west) – Saturday 28 October, 10am to 3pm.
• Poatina Power Station (north) – Saturday 11 November, 9am to 2.30 pm.

The tours are free of charge. The frequency of tours will vary at each location, and bookings are essential via the Hydro Tasmania website or directly at Eventbrite:

Hydro Tasmania’s Production and Maintenance Manager, Jesse Clark, said the tours have become extremely popular.

“Almost 900 people attended our tours last year, and the feedback was extremely positive,” Mr Clark said.

“Our people take a lot of pride in what they do, and look to put on a show that’s both informative and entertaining.

“Tasmanians are Hydro Tasmania’s most important customers, and the very people we were created to serve. Our people thrive on having a strong connection with the community, and the power station tours have become a crucial part of that.

“The Battery of the Nation initiative is an added attraction this year. Tasmania’s crucial role in Australia’s clean energy transition is big news at the moment.

“Our tours are a chance to get an up-close look at some of the renewable energy assets that will play a role in that vision,” he said.

The power station tours are very popular with families, and Hydro Tasmania is keen to ensure everyone can enjoy them safely. Visitors must wear long trousers, long sleeves and sturdy closed footwear.

The Battery of the Nation, including pumped hydro energy storage, has the potential to double Tasmania’s renewable energy capacity from 2500 megawatts to 5000 megawatts, lock in Tasmania’s energy security, and deliver the lowest possible power prices.

Hydro Tasmania’s Battery of the Nation team will attend the three power station tours to discuss the initiative with visitors and answer questions.
