Program Development

A program for environmentally sustainable water management for Hydro Tasmania’s operations in the Derwent catchment will be developed from early 2007.
This program will be developed when technical studies are completed, and will draw on those studies and on the community consultation results and environmental review carried out on the catchment.

Technical Studies

Eleven Derwent WMR technical studies were started in 2004 for completion in 2006. These issue-focused studies, identified through the stakeholder consultation process, include:

  • investigations into ecological health and riparian issues
  • improving recreational management  and planning
  • reviewing lake levels agreements
  • assessing fish migration and pest fish issues
  • establishing  a protocol for water level communications
  • minimising shoreline erosion
  • research study to identify possible management solutions for the Lagoon of Islands.

The issues that these studies focus on were discerned in part from our consultation process.

Community Consultation

The consultation stage of the Derwent WMR was undertaken in 2003/04. During the consultation, 618 stakeholders were initially contacted and 244 chose to take part in the consultation process including an issues survey. The Environmental Review report was widely distributed, advertisements were placed in local papers, and presentations and targeted stakeholder meetings were held. A Community Consultation Report summarising outcomes was publicly released in May 2004. The range of issues raised during the consultation were generally specific to particular regions and included water level and flow management, environmental flows, fishing amenity and access, water allocation, water quality, bank erosion and weed encroachment.

Environmental Review

The Derwent Environmental Review report was publicly released in 2001. The report is a 100-page document that outlines the geographical, biological and hydrological characteristics of the catchment, describes the hydro-electric generation system and identifies the known environmental issues in the catchment. The main aim of the report was to compile baseline information for the Derwent WMR that could be used as a starting point for the consultation stage and as background to assist in determining technical studies.
