Hydro Tasmania’s Weed Management Strategy provides a framework that is aligned with our Environmental Policy, weed management legislation (Weed Management Act 1999 Tasmania) and the state, regional and municipal weed management strategies.
Hydro Tasmania recognises that our activities could potentially contribute to weed invasion. Weeds threaten the efficiency of hydro-generation by clogging canals and intake screens.
Weeds out-compete, overwhelm and displace native plant species in natural environments and can rapidly colonise disturbed ground. Weeds can increase agricultural, horticultural and forestry costs by reducing palatability and productivity of pasture, contaminating wool and competing with crops. They also contribute to fire hazards, impede access, reduce aesthetic values and cause damage to infrastructure such as roads and buildings.
