Hydro Tasmania is playing a significant role as gold sponsor of this week’s United Nations Youth Association National Conference.
Hydro Tasmania Chief Executive Officer, Vince Hawksworth, said the conference was important in raising the awareness of young people about the importance of improving the state of the planet for future generations.
“As the producer of almost 50 percent of Australia’s renewable energy, Hydro Tasmania is in a unique position to provide a role model for further generations,” Mr Hawksworth said.
“We are internationally recognised for our environmental credentials and have been a leader in encouraging and participating in the development of sustainability protocols in the development of renewable energy worldwide.
“We are determined to leave as small a footprint as possible as a result of our activities and this is reflected in our response to climate change and our commitment to becoming Australia’s first carbon neutral power generator by 2012.
“There are a number of initiatives earmarked to help us achieve this goal, with a key one being our 1000 Gigawatt hour project that aims to maximise the renewable energy potential from our existing power system.
“We applaud the initiative of the conference organisers in setting a challenging and engaging program for delegates who represent the decision-makers of the future.
“I wish them well in their deliberations and encourage them to make the most of this unique opportunity to participate in this important process.”
