Bass Strait islands

The Bass Strait islands power supply is met by diesel and wind.

Wind supplies approximately 35% of King Island power needs of 15 GWh per annum with a peak maximum demand of about 3.4 MW. Hydro Tasmania’s Huxley Hill Wind Farm on King Island has an installed capacity of 2.5 MW from three 250 kW Nordex turbines, and two 850kW Vestas turbines, commissioned in 1998 and 2003 respectively.

The balance of King Island power supply is met by four 16-cylinder diesel engines at the power station at Currie which has a capacity of 6.05 MW.

See the story of King Island’s power development and future in the brochure: Towards a sustainable, renewable energy future (PDF 225 KB).

On Flinders Island, Hydro Tasmania operates four diesel engines in a power station at Whitemark with a capacity of 2.65 MW.

A private company owns two small capacity wind generators at Hays Hill, near Whitemark.

The Bass Strait islands are proving to be an ideal place for Hydro Tasmania and our research partners to run innovative projects for remote area power supply.

Hydro Tasmania has a formal agreement with the Tasmanian Government to provide concessional arrangements to electricity customers on the Bass Strait islands as a declared Community Service Obligation. Net costs of around $7 million per annum are funded by the Sate Government. Aurora Energy delivers these arrangements to customers through a sub-contract.

The Tasmanian Government determines the Bass Strait islands' tariffs.
