What happens?
A typical visit lasts 90 minutes and includes an introduction, a guided tour and individual exploration time.
Introduction - 30 mins
A visit to the Hands On Energy Discovery Centre starts with an introduction including a brief pictorial summary of Tasmania's electricity supply chain, focussing on Hydro Tasmania, Transend Networks and Aurora Energy.
Renewable energy, hydro electricity, and the water cycle are also introduced.
This can be followed by video presentation - to suit the selected theme - electricity generation and distribution , the greenhouse effect or hydro power.
-
Tour of the Centre - 30 mins
A guided tour by one of our education officers encompasses a whole range of issues related to renewable energy generation, transmission and distribution, hydro and wind power exhibits.
This includes environmental impacts of hydro electricity and wind farm developments, alternative energy sources, energy efficient house design and principles, running cost of appliances and star ratings.
Static and interactive models throughout the Centre help visitors to develop a clearer understanding of the above topics.
Energy efficient house design principles, energy efficient appliances, hydrogen fuel cells and hybrid cars also form part of a typical tour.
-
Individual exploration - 30 mins
Worksheets are provided for students who work in small groups of 4 - 6 for up to 45 minutes. These can be taken back to school and completed.
Each group has an opportunity to engage in most activities during a 90 minute visit.
