The Environment

Hydro-electricity is clean, renewable energy. The building of hydro-electric schemes does, however, involve significant changes to the environment.

Higher community expectations, in the 1970s, 80s and 90s, coincided with greater efforts to minimise environmental impacts associated with Hydro Tasmania's hydro-electric developments.

Detailed environmental studies were carried out on more recent schemes and these were supported with environmental construction guidelines and restoration and revegetation programs.

Hydro Tasmania has developed considerable expertise in the minimisation of visual and other environmental impacts associated with hydro-electric developments.
