Hands On Centre
School visits postponed
Hydro Tasmania has decided to postpone school visits to its Hands On Centre for the next fortnight as a result of the spread of the human swine flu virus.
The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to minimise any potential exposure to the virus of its critical personnel involved in the key business activities of energy generation and trading.
The decision will be reviewed in a fortnight to determine the spread of the virus in Tasmania, particularly in schools, and the impact on students and their families.
Schools who have booked visits to the Centre have been contacted and advised of the decision and the reasons for it being taken.
We regret having to take this decision as we have school bookings throughout the current term. However, we feel it is necessary in the current climate to minimise the potential impact on our staff and the critical functions that we carry out in terms of power generation.
Other bookings and events planned in the Hands On Centre will go ahead as planned for now.

Flu pandemic – Update 23 June 2009
The Crisis Management Team met yesterday to discuss the current situation.
It was briefed on the new Government PROTECT phase – details of what this means are at http://www.pandemic.tas.gov.au As a result of this change, staff are no longer required to stay away from work for 24 hours on return. However, this may change in the future depending on the spread of the virus.
Any staff returning from the mainland or overseas with any flu-like symptoms should stay home and seek advice via 1800-FLUDOC.
Although the virus is mild for most, it is more serious for some and is considered moderate overall. Therefore we need to continue our efforts to delay onset and spread as much as we reasonably can.
Opportunities to reduce close contact between staff (such as meetings) should be also considered where practical alternatives exist
The Hands On centre will remain closed for the time being.
This situation will be reviewed at the next meeting.
In the meantime I urge staff to stay informed, take heed of health and hygiene advice provided, continue to assess whether travel is essential, and not come to work if they feel sick.
