About the Bass Strait islands

Bass Strait is the body of water separating Tasmania from mainland Australia. There are two major inhabited islands in Bass Strait, King Island and Flinders Island.

Powering the Bass Strait islands 

Hydro Tasmania is licensed to provide electricity generation, distribution and retailing services on the Bass Strait Islands. The retailing function is performed under contract by Hydro Tasmania’s 100% owned retailing entity Momentum Energy

Momentum Energy has a specific customer charter for Bass Strait island customers. The Charter summarises the rights, entitlements and obligations you have as a customer and the rights, entitlements and obligations Momentum Energy and Hydro Tasmania have relating to the provision of electricity services.

The Charter is divided into sections relating to the roles of Momentum Energy and Hydro Tasmania on the Bass Strait islands. The Charter should be read in conjunction with your Momentum Energy contract terms and conditions.

Hydro Tasmania has a formal agreement with the Tasmanian Government to provide concessional arrangements to electricity customers living on the Bass Strait islands via a declared Community Service Obligation. It determines the pricing for customers.

Safety of residents on King and Flinders islands is of great importance to Hydro Tasmania, particularly where electricity is involved.

Hydro Tasmania reminds residents to stop, look up and look out and be safe when operating equipment near powerlines.
