Powering Bass Strait islands

Powering the Bass Strait islands

Bass Strait is the body of water separating Tasmania from mainland Australia. There are two major inhabited islands in Bass Strait, King Island and Flinders Island.

Hydro Tasmania is licensed to provide electricity generation, distribution and retailing services on the Bass Strait Islands. The retailing function is performed under contract by Hydro Tasmania’s 100% owned retailing entity Momentum Energy

You can find out how each island generates electricity in 'our power stations'.

Power is generated by a number entities - see the rules that govern the dispatch of that power.

King Island is proving to be an ideal place for Hydro Tasmania and our research partners to innovate methods for renewable energy and remote area power supply (RAPS). Find out more about King Island's renewable energy integration project.
